As we stand at the threshold of a new year, it’s natural to reflect on the past and contemplate the future. For many, this time brings a mix of hope and uncertainty. In such moments, it’s crucial to ensure we have a solid foundation to stand upon when everything around us seems to shake.

For Christians, this foundation is built upon four essential pillars: prayer, relationship with God, community, and Scripture. Today, let’s focus on the transformative power of God’s Word and its ability to equip us for the journey ahead.

Imagine for a moment that an angel appeared to you tonight, informing you that God Himself would speak to you tomorrow evening at a specific location. How would you respond? Undoubtedly, you’d do everything in your power to be there, hanging on every word. Yet, remarkably, we have God’s Word readily available to us in the form of the Bible. So why don’t we approach it with the same eagerness and reverence?

The answer lies in what we truly believe about Scripture. We often profess that the Bible is inspired by the Holy Spirit, capable of transforming our lives and speaking directly to our circumstances. But do our actions align with these beliefs? Our behaviour always stems from our deepest convictions, so we must ask ourselves: Do we genuinely believe in the power of God’s Word, or are we simply paying lip service to an expected ideal?

Psalm 119 beautifully captures the heart of someone who truly delights in God’s Word:

“Blessed are you, O Lord; teach me your statutes!
With my lips I declare all the rules of your mouth.

Because we lack a sense of urgency. We forget that our time is limited, and we push off what’s truly important, believing we’ll always have tomorrow.

This realization brings to mind a powerful teaching from Jesus found in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 12. In this passage, Jesus speaks to his disciples about the importance of being ready and watchful. He paints a vivid picture using the imagery of servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding feast:

“Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning, and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks.” (Luke 12:35-36)

This metaphor would have resonated deeply with Jesus’ audience. The image of a servant with their robes tied up, ready for action, symbolizes removing hindrances and obstacles that might interfere with their duties. It’s a call to preparedness, to be alert and ready to serve at a moment’s notice.

But what’s truly remarkable about this teaching is the emphasis on blessing. Three times in this short passage, Jesus uses the word “blessed” to describe the servants who are found ready and waiting. This isn’t a message of fear or intimidation; it’s an invitation to joy and fulfilment. Jesus isn’t trying to scare us into service – He’s showing us the path to true happiness and purpose.

The parable takes an unexpected turn when Jesus describes the master’s response to finding his servants watchful:

“Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them.” (Luke 12:37)

There is one bodyand one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; ⁵ one Lord, one faith, one baptism; ⁶ one God and Father of all,who is over all and through all and in all.

⁷ But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it.⁸ This is why it says:

“When he ascended on high,
    he took many captives
    and gave gifts to his people.”

⁹ (What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions? ¹⁰ He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.) ¹¹ So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, ¹² to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up ¹³ until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
