Imagine for a moment that you only had one year left to live. How would your priorities change? What would suddenly become important to you? Now, take it a step further – what if you only had one month?

This thought-provoking exercise, conducted by psychologists, reveals a profound truth about human nature: we often know what truly matters in life, but we fail to act on it. Why? Because we lack a sense of urgency. We forget that our time is limited, and we push off what’s truly important, believing we’ll always have tomorrow.

This realization brings to mind a powerful teaching from Jesus found in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 12. In this passage, Jesus speaks to his disciples about the importance of being ready and watchful. He paints a vivid picture using the imagery of servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding feast:

“Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning, and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks.” (Luke 12:35-36)

This metaphor would have resonated deeply with Jesus’ audience. The image of a servant with their robes tied up, ready for action, symbolizes removing hindrances and obstacles that might interfere with their duties. It’s a call to preparedness, to be alert and ready to serve at a moment’s notice.

But what’s truly remarkable about this teaching is the emphasis on blessing. Three times in this short passage, Jesus uses the word “blessed” to describe the servants who are found ready and waiting. This isn’t a message of fear or intimidation; it’s an invitation to joy and fulfilment. Jesus isn’t trying to scare us into service – He’s showing us the path to true happiness and purpose.

The parable takes an unexpected turn when Jesus describes the master’s response to finding his servants watchful:

“Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them.” (Luke 12:37)

This role reversal – the master becoming the servant – would have been shocking to Jesus’ listeners. It speaks to the profound honour and intimacy that await those who faithfully serve and remain vigilant. For believers, this points to the incredible reality of our relationship with Christ – He is not a distant, demanding taskmaster, but a loving Lord who delights in blessing His faithful followers.

Jesus goes on to stress the importance of readiness at all times, even in the late watches of the night. He compares His return to a thief breaking into a house – the precise timing is unknown, but the need for constant vigilance is clear. This teaching applies not only to Christ’s ultimate return but also to our individual encounters with Him throughout our lives and at the moment of our death.

The passage then takes an interesting turn when Peter asks if this teaching is meant specifically for the disciples or for everyone. Jesus responds with another parable about a faithful and wise manager, emphasizing personal responsibility and the importance of stewarding what we’ve been given.

This leads to a profound principle: “Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more.” (Luke 12:48)

We all have different gifts, abilities, and levels of spiritual understanding. The call to readiness and faithfulness applies to everyone, but the specifics of how that looks will vary from person to person. The key is to be faithful with whatever we’ve been entrusted.

So, what does this mean for us today? How can we live as “watchful servants,” ready for our Master’s return?

Cultivate a heart that seeks God daily. It’s not about a checklist of tasks, but about nurturing a vibrant relationship with Christ.

Prioritize obedience over religious activity. As the prophet Samuel declared, “Obedience is better than sacrifice.” (1 Samuel 15:22) God desires our hearts more than our busyness.

Be faithful with what you’ve been given. Whether it’s knowledge of Scripture, spiritual gifts, or material resources, use them wisely and for God’s glory.

Live with an eternal perspective. Remember that this life is temporary, and our choices have lasting consequences.

Stay alert to God’s leading. Be open to how He might be calling you to serve, grow, or change.

Don’t delay in doing what you know is right. Whether it’s forgiving someone, reconciling a relationship, or addressing sin in your life, act with urgency.

Regularly examine your priorities. Are you investing your time and energy in what truly matters?

The call to readiness is not meant to induce anxiety or fear. Rather, it’s an invitation to live purposefully and joyfully, knowing that our faithfulness will be rewarded beyond measure. When we align our lives with God’s will and remain vigilant, we position ourselves to experience the richest blessings of His kingdom.

As you reflect on this teaching, consider: What areas of your life need realignment? Where have you been procrastinating on important spiritual matters? What would it look like for you to live with greater urgency and purpose?

Remember, the goal isn’t perfection, but progress. Each day is an opportunity to draw closer to God, to serve Him more faithfully, and to prepare our hearts for that glorious moment when we will see Him face to face.

Let us be like those blessed servants, with our lamps burning bright, eagerly anticipating our Master’s return. For in that readiness, we will find true fulfilment, purpose, and joy.
